Bitcoin's layer two Lightning Network is having its Cryptokitties moment, as "Satoshi's Place" has gone viral. The site allows you to buy pixels on a 1000 x 1000 grid using Lightning. Each pixel costs one hundred millionth of a Bitcoin. While much of the usage has degraded into trolling, the application nonetheless demonstrates how far Lightning has come in its ability to offer scaleable micropayments on top of the Bitcoin network. While layer two scaling solutions on Bitcoin are finally starting to show promise, the Ethereum community is moving closer to deploying various on-chain (i.e. layer one) scaling efforts. At the most recent Ethereum Core Developer's call, the team announced their intention to deploy hybrid Proof-of-Stake (codenamed Casper) at the same time as sharding. Link.
